Each year the USS Athena adopts endangered species as part of our project to better the world today, instead of waiting for the 24th century. You will find that we have a tendency to lean towards furry animals, usually of the cute variety. We also take great joy in naming each adoptee an appropriate, but very Star Trekish, nickname. Our annual fundraisers are geared towards raising the money necessary to adopt them so that we can make them part of our crew, at least for the year.
The most distinguishing characteristic of the Horned Puffin is the fleshy horns above their eyes, for which it gets its name. The Horned Puffin can be distinguished from Tufted Puffins by their white chest and belly. In breeding season, their bill becomes larger and turns bright yellow with an orange tip. Plumage during the winter and on juveniles is much duller, with dark brown feathers on their face and body. The Horned Puffin´s beak is smaller and duller during the winter months.
Puffins seem to have a very curious nature and spend a lot of time, especially while diving, investigating all kinds of objects and creatures. They have an amazing diving ability, and can dive over 100 feet deep. While at sea, they spend a lot time floating at the surface and preening their feathers to keep insulated in the cold water.
"Wolf" is the common name for the largest member of the genus Canis species, which includes coyotes, jackals, foxes, and domestic dogs. Wolves are social animals who live in groups called "packs" and mate for life. The pack is led by an alpha male and female. Their territory can span as much as 100 miles, depending on available food sources. Wolves have high endurance and will outlast prey in a chase.
Throughout the twentieth century, wolves have been hunted to the brink of extinction in the U.S. Attempts are now being made to reintroduce the timber wolf to its natural habitats, such as Yellowstone National Park. Ten wolves reside at the Wildlife Waystation. Five of these wolves are among the Wildlife Waystation's most popular education animals and can frequently be seen on their Tour Sunday Animal Presentations.
